MAKE DO - czyli jak sobie poradzić jak się nie ma co się lubi

Looks like I have to make do with one of these for dinner!

Jestem pewien, że niektórzy z Was czasem nie wiedzą, kiedy użyć „do”, a kiedy „make”. Mówimy do the shopping (poprawnie), ale "make the shopping" to już zła kolokacja. Jest jednak jedno ciekawe wyrażenie w języku angielskim, które łączy oba te czasowniki: MAKE DO.

Co to znaczy dokładnie?

Ostatnio miałem operację przegrody nosowej, więc przez kilka dni trudno mi było oddychać przez nos. Nie mogłem spać na boku, jak zwykle, i musiałem oddychać przez usta — co było bardzo nieprzyjemne. And if the fridge is empty, you might just have to make do with that tin of beans that's been waiting for this moment for the past couple of months.

MAKE DO WITH STH vs DO WITHOUT STH

MAKE DO is related to another phrase — DO WITHOUT — but they are not the same.

When you make do with something, you use a less-than-perfect substitute.When you do without something, you manage without it altogether.
